Grain supplier merger gets shareholder backing

The merger of grain suppliers Centaur Grain and Grainfarmers has gained the backing of shareholders meaning that the deal is only dependent on High Court approval, expected mid-November.

The new business, to be called Openfield, will be the UK’s leading farmer-controlled grain marketer and supplier. It will work with over 7000 farmers providing 20 per cent of the UK grain market’s needs, or four million tonnes of grain a year. The deal has already gained approval from the Office of Fair Trading, according with bakeryandsnacks.com

New Cargill plant increases rapeseed oil supply

Cargill has opened a huge new rapeseed plant in western France, said to provide a new outlet for local farmers and bring a new source of rapeseed oil for the food and fuel industries.

Soft drinks continue Eastern European surge

The Eastern European market for fruit juices and nectars was up by 10 per cent to €6.4bn last year, an upward trajectory expected to continue in the coming years, says a new report.
Beverage market analyst Zenith International says that consumption volumes in the region for the segment rose 9.5 per cent to 5.6bn litres in 2007, after having nearly doubled over the last five years.

Make Weed Management Decisions NOW

Believe it or not, now is the time to begin thinking about weed management for the 2009 growing season. And as always, the watchword is “stewardship”, sais Micheal Owen, from the Department of Agronomy of Iowa State University.

As you begin to harvest the fields, note the weeds that are present and think back to what you did last spring and summer to control the weeds. If you only sprayed glyphosate or any other single herbicide, rethink the tactic. Recurrent application of herbicides will select rapidly for weeds that do not respond to that herbicide.
