Addressing agricultural eutrophication in Denmark

Water quality levels in many Danish lakes and rivers have been recorded at levels below the standards anticipated by the EU’s Water Framework Directive (WFD). For example previous assessments by regional authorities found that only around 12% of lakes sampled were considered to have acceptable water quality conditions and approximately half of the streams analysed could not meet the authorities’ required quality goals. Eutrophication linked to agriculture was judged to be a major contributory factor to the poor water conditions and LIFE Environment funds have been deployed to demonstrate how farm-led action can help improve the quality of Danish water resources. While Romania was one of Europe’s largest powdered milk producers in the 1990s, with 40 factories, it now has only four units with domestic capital, and imports cover 75 percent of the local market. Domestic production, of 29,300 tons in 1990, fell to 6,136 tons last year, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS), due to the competition of low-priced imports. At the same time, local powdered milk exports declined significantly, due to restrictions on deliveries in the European Union, and main destinations continuing to be countries in the Middle East and Asia.

The Code of Good Practice intensifies the dispute between foodstuff producers and retailers

The Code of Good Practice or the foodstuff trade law, signed into law on Wednesday by Romania’s President Traian Basescu will not lead to a drop in foodstuff prices, and local traders actually expect such prices to rise. Code of Good Practice promotes battle over prices and jobs

The Code of Good Practice, currently on the President’s desk, is widening the gap between local foodstuff producers and traders, the latter mostly international networks. Representatives of local producers say this is the best anti-crisis measure, because it would protect the local industry, which would be able to create jobs, and would lead to a drop in foodstuff imports. Traders argue that prices will rise, there will be financial shortages that can generate bankruptcies and, implicitly, a drop in the number of jobs in the retail sector.
